What It Does
If you use Google Tag Manager, this integration lets you deploy and manage your CTM tracking code without manually copying tracking scripts into GTM. This integration is ideal for organizations that want a faster, more consistent way to deploy and maintain CTM tracking code without involving developers for routine tracking updates.
Once connected, CTM automatically creates the required GTM tag, applies an All Pages trigger, and publishes your GTM workspace.
Important considerations before configuring this integration:
- If you use the CTM WordPress plugin, do not install the CTM tracking code through Google Tag Manager. The plugin already installs the tracking code.
- Avoid running CTM’s DNI script at the same time as another call tracking or DNI script. This can cause number-swapping conflicts and inaccurate attribution. Validate your CTM deployment, then remove the previous provider’s script.
Prerequisites
Before you begin, make sure you have:
- The CTM account ID (on any plan) for the tracking code deployment.
- A CTM login with permission to manage Google Tag Manager settings.
- A Google account with access to the GTM account, container, and workspace you want to use.
- Permission in Google Tag Manager to edit containers, edit container versions, and publish.
How to Set Up the Integration
Connect Google Tag Manager
CTM uses Google authorization and requires all requested GTM permissions before the connection is saved. If you do not grant all permissions, CTM does not link the integration.
- Go to Account Settings > Integrations.
- Select Google Tag Manager.
- Click Connect Google Tag Manager.
- Choose the Google account that has access to the GTM workspace.
- Grant all requested GTM permissions.
- After authorization, CTM returns you to the Google Tag Manager page.
- Confirm the page shows Google Tag Manager Deployment and a Connected level.

Create a Deployment Mapping
Mapping links a CTM account to a Google Tag Manager account, container, and workspace so CTM knows where to deploy your tracking code. CTM automatically generates a unique tag name so you can easily identify the deployed tracking tag in Google Tag Manager (see format below).
CTM Tracking Code - [CTM Account ID]
- Go to Account Settings > Integrations > Google Tag Manager.
- Click Create Google Tag Manager Mapping.
- Select the CTM Account you want to deploy tracking code for.
- Review the generated Tag Name.
- Select the GTM Account.
- Select the Container.
- Select the Workspace.
- Set Deploy Status to Deployed / Active.
- Review the Tracking Code Script preview.
- Click Save Mapping.
After saving, CTM shows a success message that the mapping was saved and deployment was queued.
Confirm Deployment
- Stay on Account Settings > Integrations > Google Tag Manager.
- Find the mapping in the table.
- Review the GTM Status column.
- Confirm the status changes to Deployed.
- If the row includes Open in GTM, click it to view the CTM-managed tag in Google Tag Manager.
Verify Deployment
You can confirm the integration is working in these places:
- In CTM, the mapping shows GTM Status: Deployed.
- In CTM, the mapping shows a Last deployed timestamp.
- In Google Tag Manager, the workspace contains a Custom HTML tag named CTM Tracking Code - [CTM Account ID].
- In Google Tag Manager, the CTM tag uses an All Pages page view trigger.
- On your website, CTM tracking works after the GTM container is published.
Manage an Existing Deployment
Validate GTM
Use Validate GTM to check whether the CTM-managed tag and trigger still exist in the selected GTM workspace. If CTM finds the tag or trigger by name, it syncs the CTM deployment state. If the workspace or tag is missing, CTM clears or updates the deployment state so the mapping reflects what exists in GTM.
Disable a Mapping
You can set a mapping to Not deployed / Inactive. If CTM previously deployed the tag and trigger, CTM queues their removal from GTM.
Delete a Mapping
You can also delete a mapping. If CTM has a remote GTM tag or trigger paths saved, CTM queues cleanup in GTM before deleting the CTM mapping.
Disconnect GTM
- Go to Account Settings > Integrations > Google Tag Manager.
- Click Disconnect.
- Confirm the disconnect message.
CTM removes CTM-managed GTM tags and triggers, deletes CTM mappings, and unlinks the Google account. CTM does not delete GTM accounts, containers, workspaces, or non-CTM tags.
Troubleshooting
Can’t Connect Google Tag Manager
Likely cause: CTM did not receive all required Google permissions.
Fix:
- Go to Account Settings > Integrations > Google Tag Manager.
- Click Connect Google Tag Manager again.
- Choose the correct Google account.
- Grant all requested permissions.
Agency-Level Connection Exists, But I Can't Create a Mapping
Likely cause: An agency-level GTM connection exists, and account-level overrides are not enabled for the agency.
Fix:
- Ask an agency administrator to manage the GTM mapping.
- Ask the agency administrator to allow account-level GTM overrides if your account needs its own connection.
- Return to Account Settings > Integrations > Google Tag Manager after the setting is changed.
Mapping Failed
Likely cause: GTM rejected the deployment, the workspace had a publish issue, the Google token could not refresh, or GTM returned a temporary API error.
Fix:
- Open the mapping and review the Last error message.
- Confirm the selected GTM account, container, and workspace still exist.
- Click Validate GTM.
- Reconnect Google Tag Manager if the error mentions authorization or token access.
GTM Tag is Missing
Likely cause: The CTM-managed tag or trigger was deleted or changed in Google Tag Manager.
Fix:
- Go to Account Settings > Integrations > Google Tag Manager.
- Open the mapping.
- Click Validate GTM.
- If CTM clears the deployment state, save the mapping again with Deploy Status set to Deployed / Active.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does CTM create in Google Tag Manager?
CTM creates a Custom HTML tag with the CTM tracking script and a Page View trigger for all pages. CTM then creates and publishes a GTM container version
Does this integration send CTM events to the GTM dataLayer?
No. This integration deploys the CTM tracking script into GTM as a Custom HTML tag. It does not create dataLayer events, GA4 event tags, Google Ads conversion tags, or third-party pixel tags.
Will disconnecting delete my GTM container?
No. Disconnecting removes CTM-managed GTM tags and triggers, deletes CTM mappings, and unlinks the Google account from CTM. It does not delete GTM accounts, containers, workspaces, or non-CTM tags.
Can one agency-level connection manage mappings for multiple CTM accounts?
Yes. Agency administrators can use an agency-level GTM connection and create mappings across accounts in the agency.
Can an account use its own GTM connection if the agency already has one?
Only if account-level GTM overrides are enabled for the agency. If overrides are not enabled, the account sees the agency-level connection but cannot create its own account-level mapping.
